1. Conduct original research pertaining to the impact of abortion on women, men, children, primary and secondary relationships, public policy, and society.
a. Conduct studies using secondary data that is nationally representative and freely available over the internet.
b. Implement grant-funded complex research designs with comprehensive data collection efforts.
2. Foster national and international scholarly communication and collaboration.
a. Encourage collaborative research efforts in the U.S. and abroad.
b. Disseminate useful information on the APART website, in
scientific journals, and via presentations at national and international conferences and other venues.
c. Maintain up-to-date lists of peer-reviewed articles related to abortion and mental health.
d. Provide full-text articles and abstracts of articles published in peer reviewed journals.
e. Consult with researchers engaging in post-abortion research both here in the U.S. and abroad.
f. Develop new opportunities for international scientific information exchange, including conferences and web-based teleconferencing.
3. Facilitate the conduct of scientifically accurate research by others.
a. Assist in the objective interpretation of post-abortion researching findings.
b. Review and provide advice regarding research protocols and papers in progress related to abortion and mental health.
c. Continue to serve and be available for future service on editorial boards and to participate in review of submissions for peer-reviewed psychology and medical journals.
4. Foster collaboration between scientists and practitioners.
a. Encourage mental health and pastoral care providers to share clinical information regarding abortion and well-being.
b. Develop dialogue between investigators and practitioners by participating in joint professional information exchanges at professional conferences.
c. Enhance the knowledge and skills of practitioners by providing scientifically accurate information regarding the mental health risks of abortion.
5. Provide mental health training resources.
a. Provide access to relevant information for practitioners on the APART website.
b. Develop in-service training programs for pregnancy resource centers and mental health professionals.
c. Provide continuing education seminars available both in the U.S. and internationally.
6. Enhance informed consent, abortion decision-making, and post-abortion adjustment.
a. Provide easily interpreted, one-page overviews of the literature on abortion and mental heath with full citations to be used by interested individuals and organizations.
b. Offer consultation to health care organizations in both public and private sectors, research institutes, and professionals in medicine, mental health, public health and law.
c. Provide services to assist pregnancy resource centers with efforts to conduct research and evaluate the efficacy of center programs.
7. Reduce the secrecy and shame associated with post-abortion grief and trauma
a. Disseminate scientific information conveying the prevalence of a wide range of adverse emotional effects following abortion emphasizing that adverse psychological outcomes after abortion may be normative for many and do not reflect personal deficiency or abnormal responses.
b. Encourage individuals who experience feelings of shame and secrecy, grief, and/or trauma in association with an abortion to seek appropriate professional counseling.
c. Provide literature-based, up to date presentations of the literature on mental health and abortion to interested organizations.
d. Participate in interviews for interested media outlets.
